For roles that push hardware hard every day, the laptop-or-desktop question isn't quite the right one. The real question is whether the person needs a workstation, a specific class of machine built for sustained heavy compute, or whether a well-specced business laptop is enough. Getting this wrong costs Irish companies real money, both in wasted time and in devices that need replacing early.

ECC memory (error-correcting). Standard RAM tolerates the occasional bit flip. In a spreadsheet, you'd never notice. In a twelve-hour simulation or a large database rebuild, that flip can corrupt the result silently.
Professional CPUs. Intel Xeon W and AMD Threadripper Pro are built for sustained multi-core loads and support far more memory than consumer chips. A gaming Ryzen 9 will beat them on some benchmarks; a Threadripper Pro will finish a five-hour render an hour sooner.
Certified professional GPUs. NVIDIA RTX A-series (formerly Quadro) and Radeon Pro cards ship with drivers tested against specific applications like Autodesk, Adobe, Siemens NX and ANSYS. That certification is why a €1,800 Pro card can outperform a €2,500 gaming card in a certified app.
ISV certification. Independent Software Vendors like Autodesk, Dassault and Adobe publish lists of certified hardware. If a machine isn't on the list, you're not covered when something goes wrong.
Cooling designed for full load. Consumer machines throttle after a few minutes at 100%. Workstations are built to hold peak performance for hours.
None of this matters for email, Teams and light Excel work. All of it matters for a structural engineer running finite element analysis, or an editor colour-grading 4K footage.
Where a Good Business Laptop Still Makes Sense
Most people in most Irish offices don't need a workstation. A well-specced business laptop with 16GB RAM, a modern i7 or Ryzen 7, and a decent SSD handles the majority of professional work comfortably. If someone's day is 80% browser, Office, Teams calls and moderate data work, buying them a workstation is money you won't get back.

The trouble starts when someone whose job involves genuinely heavy compute gets given a mid-range laptop because that's what the standard build is. They hit walls every day, blame the software, and their productivity quietly drops.
The Workloads That Break Consumer Hardware

"Data-intensive" is a broad phrase. In practical terms, these are the workloads where a proper workstation earns back its cost.
CAD, BIM and 3D design. AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360. Model sizes have grown faster than laptop specs. A big Revit federated model with clash detection running will stall a mainstream laptop for minutes at a time.
Video and motion graphics. DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, After Effects. 4K editing is manageable on a strong laptop; 6K, 8K, heavy VFX and long timelines aren't. Adobe publishes minimum and recommended specs for Premiere Pro and After Effects, and the recommended tier sits firmly in workstation territory.
Data science, ML and analytics. Local model training, large Jupyter notebooks, big pandas dataframes, geospatial processing. The bottleneck is usually RAM and single-thread speed, and consumer laptops top out lower than most people think.
Engineering simulation. FEA, CFD, structural analysis. These are the classic Xeon-and-ECC workloads. A run that takes eight hours on a workstation can take twenty-four on a mismatched laptop, if it completes at all.
Software builds and containers. Large monorepos, heavy Docker workloads, local Kubernetes clusters. Developers who rebuild often lose real hours a week to slow machines.
GIS and scientific computing. ArcGIS Pro, QGIS with large raster datasets, MATLAB, R with big datasets.
If someone's role sits in one of these, the machine matters far more than the job title suggests.
Mobile Workstations: The Middle Ground

They cost more than a business laptop, typically €2,500 and up well-configured, and they weigh more. Battery life under real workload is honest rather than heroic. But for a design engineer who has to be on site half the week, or an editor who cuts on location, a mobile workstation is often the right answer even when a tower would be cheaper.
The trade-off is real: a tower workstation at the same price will always outrun a mobile one on sustained load, and it's easier to upgrade later. Where the person doesn't need to move, the tower wins on both performance and lifespan.
True Cost of the Wrong Machine
Buying underspec looks like a saving on the invoice. It rarely is, once you count:

Early replacement. A machine that's marginal on day one becomes unusable in two years, not four. Depreciation gets front-loaded.
